The advantages of Ecotherapy as a healing process are that it is relatively inexpensive and provides an accelerated healing experience. Ecotherapy programmes take people out of their every day environment and provide them with an opportunity for psychological shifts and changes in behaviour.
The process requires little equipment and is therefore transferable and accessible to most communities. It also provides an alternative to one-on-one counselling, which is usually unaffordable. Ecotherapy is therefore a useful intervention for trauma victims as they often suffer from a sense of disconnection from their self, their bodIES, their communitIES and other people.
MEANS
Ecotherapy in practice
Ecotherapy uses local wilderness experiences to increase psychological awareness and to bring about healing. Group processes, individual reflection, symbols and rituals are used in an accessible wilderness setting to heighten peoples' awareness of the connection between themselves, other people and the natural environment.
